Philadelphia Times "The Smell of Death is in the Air at Gettysburg" On July 3, 1863,General Hancock knew that there was going to be a battle and he wasnt going to run. One thing I had heard Hancock say was "Everyones too tired, too sore, on both sides." Then out of no where you hear a bunch of cannons start going off. The south was firing at us. The cannons fired from left to right in a row. Then General Meade's head quaters was hit and blown up. Then the north returned fire. Then I hear someone tell General Hancock to get off of his horse. Hancock replies by saying, "There are times when a corp commander's life does not count." Then you see the south line up, there were thousands of them. Then thins got quiet as they stood there. The north stopped firing and so did they. Then their drummers started playing. They started marching toward the north. You could see them one by one appearing out of the smoke. The north was still holding their fire. The north didn't want the south to run so they just laid low. Then the firing of the cannons start again when the south got close enough. The smell of death was starting to grow more and mor eby every second that past. As the north was laying on the ground behind the wall staying out of the way of the cannons firing. While they just laid there and waited till the south got close enough and at just the right time. As the south jumped over a fence infront of the north, many fell dead. Then all the north rose up and started shooting. The south dropped like little flies on a hot light bulb. Then in the middle of it all, Hancock was still on his horse. Then Hancock falls off his horse, he got shot. As Hancock is laying on the ground he says,"I will not be moved untill this engagement is decided, get me a turnakett so I don't bleed to death." Then the south quickens. North starts to run, but then they stop. Then the North comes from the front and the side. It is like an L shape. The north and south are together, it is a complete horror. You can barely see what is happening it is so smokey. There was so many dead bodies laying everywhere, but if they werent dead yet they were close to it. All you could smell was dead bodies and gun powder. Then two north guys found General Armistead, a general from the south side and General Hancock's friend, about dead. Armistead had told the two men to tell Hancock that he regrets and he is sorry. Armistead had died. On the other hand, the doctors think the Hancock is going to survive. To many this was the turning point in the Civil War.and some how it all did not work out
